There are many reasons for people to be following a diet.
Perhaps it is a special, doctor-advised regimen meant to control
or prevent certain illnesses such as high blood pressure or
diabetes. Maybe a diet is required due to particular food
allergies like a gluten-free diet or for people who are lactose
intolerant. The option of a diet such as vegetarian or
macrobiotic might simply be a personal lifestyle choice.
However, most people who are dieting are doing so because they
are ...

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above
normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (sugar)
for our bodies to burn to create energy. The pancreas, an organ
that lies near the stomach, produces a hormone called insulin to
help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have
diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't
use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes large
amounts of sugar to build up in your blood.
The actual ...

There are three basic units the body uses for energy:
1. Fats
2. Proteins
3. Carbohydrates
All three can be converted to blood glucose. However, while fats
and proteins are converted slowly, carbohydrates are converted
quickly causing quick spikes in the body's blood sugar levels.
These spikes in blood sugar levels cause the pancreas to create
and release insulin until the blood sugar level returns to
normal.
Meanwhile, insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas that
lowers our blood's glucose ...

In order to eat fewer calories than you need, you have to
determine how many calories you actually need. Adults can
calculate their approximate energy needs using the following
formula:
A. Body weight multiplied by 12 (for men) or 11 (for women)
e.g., 150 lbs. x 12 = 1800
B. Activity One third body weight multiplied by the number of
hours you don't sleep, typically 16 hours 150 lbs. x 1/3 = 50 x
16 = 800
C. Required Calories A + B 1800 + 800 = 2600
Thus, we determine that a 150-pound man ...

Some people describe asthma as feeling like they are trying to breathe though a straw. The description fits perfectly, because during an attack, airways in the lungs squeeze shut, making it difficult to draw in air. At the same time, the narrowed airways become inflamed and filled with mucus, stifling the airways even further. Asthma can be serious - even fatal. But if you can take care of yourself, asthma isn't cause for alarm. Here are some ways to prevent future episodes.

Many people think obesity means that a person is overweight, but
that's not exactly true. An overweight person has a surplus
amount of weight that includes muscle, bone, fat and water. An
obese person has a surplus of body fat. Body Mass Index (BMI) is
commonly used to determine if a person is obese or not. A person
with a BMI over 30 is considered to be obese, and a BMI over 40
is considered to be severely obese.
Factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics
and certain ...

Remember the New York teenagers, Ashley Pelman and Jazlyn
Bradley, who sued McDonald's for making them obese? One of the
plaintiffs included a 15-year-old Bronx boy who says he's been
eating McDonald's food since the age of six. Gregory Rhymes--at
5 feet, 6 inches tall--says he now weighs 400 pounds and has
been diagnosed with diabetes. Newsday reported that the
children's parents say they never saw posters in McDonald's
restaurants that explain the nutritional content of the food.

Flu can affect 10 to 30 percent of the U.S. population each
winter. The flu virus can linger in the air for as long as three
hours. In close quarters, conditions are ripe for the spread of
the virus. That explains why the highest incidence of the flu is
in 5- to 18-year-olds, who spend much of their time in school,
in close contact with their classmates. The most serious
complications occur in older adults, however, especially those
in managed care. Do not give aspirin or other ...
